I've traveled most of the western states on bike, at least as far as Texas on up to the Dakotas. What always amazes me is that in every other state, whenever you hit a patch of freeway that has the least bit of defect to it, you will see orange warning signs and big barrell highway cones. And those patches which are market is that way are still better than the average portion of California Highway. I grew up in California and was probably spoiled by the highway boom of the 60's. If you look at just about any overcrossing, you'll see that it was built between 55 and 65 (unless of course it was part of a recent expansion). Since then, we've only maintained what we could and put more and more cars on the road (one major difference between us and the rest of the states is the sheer volume of vehicles). But, with more cars on the road, isn't there more road tax being collected from registrations and fuel? Somethings wrong.
It just gets me to thinking when the other states deem a portion of the road "a hazzard requiring signage to alert travelers", that it is just normal roadway here, and that only things much worse get signs here in California.
