Problems on I-80, Sportster

Postby Kelly on Tue Jul 07, 2009 3:35 am

Just curious, is anyone else getting the crap beaten out of them up & down the Hwy 80 corridor? Has anyone or their bike had any adverse reaction to the 'speed bumps' that have replaced the usual potholes. It's kind of hard not to bottom out front & back. Thought it was just my bike, but my truck has similar reactions.
I've had my forks slammed so hard that they shifted about 1/4" on one side and more than 1/2" on the other. That occured at 37 & 121 on May 23rd. In order to get Cal Trans to pay up - for less than $5,000. You have to call 510-286-5806 and I believe that you have to come up with two estimates. I've already had my forks taken care of, just to dangerous to ride like that.

I-80 SUCKS!

Postby IronSteedModerator on Wed Jul 08, 2009 5:31 pm

Kelly,

You are not alone. I've got a greivance to file with CalTrans due to slamming a pothole on 80. I have an older model Buell and nailed the pothole so hard that it bent my rim (spun aluminum Marchesini race rims), tore my headlight out of its mounting, and blew the battery loose from it's bracket, tearing the ground wire out of it in the process.
Talk about a wild ride. The headlight and the battery are not really a big issue, but the rim will cost.

I-80 only sucks in California!! I just got back from a 2400 mile trip via I-80, the second I got out of Ca It was smooth sailing. rode from here to Loveland, Co. I could only wish that Cali could get their sh*t together and fix these roads..

I've traveled most of the western states on bike, at least as far as Texas on up to the Dakotas. What always amazes me is that in every other state, whenever you hit a patch of freeway that has the least bit of defect to it, you will see orange warning signs and big barrell highway cones. And those patches which are market is that way are still better than the average portion of California Highway. I grew up in California and was probably spoiled by the highway boom of the 60's. If you look at just about any overcrossing, you'll see that it was built between 55 and 65 (unless of course it was part of a recent expansion). Since then, we've only maintained what we could and put more and more cars on the road (one major difference between us and the rest of the states is the sheer volume of vehicles). But, with more cars on the road, isn't there more road tax being collected from registrations and fuel? Somethings wrong.

It just gets me to thinking when the other states deem a portion of the road "a hazzard requiring signage to alert travelers", that it is just normal roadway here, and that only things much worse get signs here in California.

Tell me about it! I just paid $690.00 for my registration on my 3yr old truck!!
